Sip, Swirl & Stay In: A DIY Wine Tasting at the Lilac Lakehouse

Some nights, going out just doesn’t sound as good as staying in. At the Lilac Lakehouse, that’s more than okay—it’s encouraged. And thanks to our comfy downstairs lounge, thoughtful lighting, and our proximity to some of Ontario’s most charming wineries, you don’t need to leave the house to enjoy a wine tasting worthy of the County.

Whether you’re a casual sipper, a Pinot Noir purist, or just here for the cheese board, this is your invitation to settle in, pop a few corks, and create your own wine-tasting night right at home.

Where to Set the Scene

The best place for a relaxed wine tasting? Downstairs in the lounge. The space is perfect: plush seating, color-changing lights for ambiance, and a big table to lay out your wine line-up, glasses, and snacks.

Want cozy wine bar vibes? Say, “Hey Google, set the lights to amber.” Want something a little extra? Go pink, deep red, or purple for a moody tasting flight feel.

Put on a playlist (we recommend soft jazz or acoustic indie), dim the lights, and let the sipping begin.

🍇 What to Pour: Local Wine Guide

You’re in Prince Edward County, one of Ontario’s top wine regions. Here are a few local favourites to track down at nearby shops or wineries during your stay:

1. Amanda’s Vineyards – Sophisticated, balanced, and friendly

Try their County Pinot Noir or Crisp Chardonnay—both are approachable but full of County character. Amanda’s is a perfect starting point if you’re new to PEC wines.

2. Hinterland Wine Company – Sparkling stunners

Known for bubbles done right. Their Whitecap Sparkling Rosé is ideal for welcoming guests or toasting a good trip.

3. Closson Chase – Full of depth and heritage

A go-to for bold, Barrel-Aged Chardonnay and beautiful Pinot Gris. Their wines are full-bodied with a bit of drama, in the best way.

4. Grange of Prince Edward – Earthy and honest

A family-run winery with wines that tell a story. Try the Estate Gamay or Dry Riesling for something that pairs well with food and great conversation.

5. Traynor Family Vineyard – Experimental and expressive

This small winery packs a punch with skin-contact whites, natural fermentation, and innovative blends. Don’t miss their Alta Red or ever-changing Pét-Nats.

🧀 Don’t Forget the Pairings

A wine night isn’t complete without some local nibbles. Drop by Agrarian Market in Bloomfield or The Picton Cheese Company to stock up on:

  • Soft goat cheese

  • Aged cheddar

  • Baguette or rosemary crackers

  • Local jams or honey

  • Grapes, figs, or dried cherries

  • Dark chocolate for a sweet finish

Set everything up on a wooden board, pour small tastes into each glass, and compare notes with your group—or just sip and snack in silence. No judgment.

Make It Interactive

Create a little scorecard or tasting note sheet for fun. Rate each wine 1 to 5 in categories like aroma, flavor, body, and “goes great with brie.” You can even vote on a winner at the end.

If you’re doing this with friends or family, give each person a chance to describe a wine in their own words—serious or silly. (“Like licking a plum in a cedar closet” is totally valid.)

There’s something special about bringing the County to your glass—and even more special about doing it in your PJs under a soft glow of string lights and laughter. So pour a little, taste a lot, and toast to making the most of where you are.

The wineries are close by. The couch is even closer. And tonight? You’ve got everything you need right here.
