Waste Management at the Lilac Lakehouse: A Quick & Easy Guide

We know—it’s not the most glamorous part of your vacation. But when you’re staying in the County (especially at a lakeside home like ours), sorting your waste properly isn’t just polite—it’s essential. The Lilac Lakehouse sits on a private property that relies on both a septic system and our own waste sorting setup, and we want to do our part to keep the lake, the land, and the community as beautiful as you found it.

The good news? We’ve made it easy. This isn’t complicated. With just a little help from you, we can keep everything running smoothly and minimize our impact on this gorgeous piece of Prince Edward County.

Here’s what to do with your garbage, recycling, food scraps, and even your empties while you’re here.

Green Bin (Compostables)

Let’s start with the green bin—your go-to for organic waste. If it came from the earth and will return to it, it probably goes here.

You can toss in:

  • Food scraps (including fruit and veggie peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells)

  • Napkins and paper towels (as long as they aren’t soaked in cleaning products)

  • Compostable plates, cutlery, and liners (if marked as such)

We provide a small green bin in the kitchen, and it gets emptied into the outdoor compost bin near the garbage area. Please use the biodegradable liners provided, no plastic bags here!

Blue Bin (Recycling)

Next up: the blue bin, for recyclables. We do things a bit differently out here, so here’s what you can toss in:

  • Clean cardboard and paper

  • Clean plastic bottles and containers

  • Glass jars and aluminum cans

  • Empty food tins (rinsed if possible)

Please don’t include greasy pizza boxes or containers with food residue. If you're unsure, check the quick-guide on the fridge or just ask—we're happy to help.

Garbage (Clear Bags Only)

All other household waste that isn’t recyclable or compostable goes into the garbage, which here must be placed in clear garbage bags (this is a County rule). It helps with sorting compliance and lets us all do our part to reduce landfill waste.

We’ve stocked clear bags under the kitchen sink. If you run low, just let us know.

Important: no hazardous materials, batteries, or electronics, please. You can ask us where to drop those locally if needed.

🐾 Empties Program (Give Your Bottles a Second Life)

One of our favorite things here at the Lakehouse? Our Empties Bin. You’ll spot it near the kitchen or outdoor bin station—it’s marked clearly and is meant for cans, wine bottles, and beer bottles.

Why? Because 100% of the proceeds from returned empties are donated to the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward.

So if you’ve cracked a can or uncorked a bottle, feel free to rinse and toss it in. It’s one small, effortless way to give back while you relax.

Pick-Up & Storage

We take care of curbside pickup, so you don’t have to worry about setting bins out. All we ask is that:

  • You empty indoor bins into the clearly marked outdoor containers near the driveway before you leave.

  • Please close bin lids tightly to avoid critters (yes, the raccoons are smarter than they look).

  • If you have extra bags that won’t fit, just let us know—we’ll take care of it for you.

We know this might feel like a lot for a short stay—but even little actions add up. By sorting your waste and following our system, you’re helping keep this property, our lake, and the entire County cleaner, greener, and more sustainable for everyone who visits after you.

And for that, we’re truly grateful.

So thank you for caring and now that the waste talk is done, go grab a coffee, open those lakeview windows, and enjoy the beauty of a home that’s taken care of, by all of us, together.
