When you’re surrounded by clear lake water, blooming gardens, and clean country air, it’s easy to remember just how important it is to take care of the environment around you. At the Lilac Lakehouse, we’ve made it easy for you to do just that—with a simple, clearly labeled waste and recycling setup that helps keep our space (and the County) beautiful.
And the best part? Your empty wine bottle could help a local animal find a forever home.
Here’s everything you need to know about waste at the Lakehouse:
You'll find a green bin system ready to collect food scraps and organic waste. These go to a local compost facility, keeping unnecessary waste out of the landfill.
✔️ Yes, please:
Fruit and veggie scraps
Coffee grounds and filters
Napkins and paper towels
Meat, bones, and dairy
❌ No, thanks:
Plastic or compostable-looking packaging (unless marked "compostable in municipal facilities")
Diapers, wipes, or litter
Grease or oils
👉 Green bin instructions are posted inside the house to help you sort things correctly.
We provide regular garbage bins for anything that can’t be recycled or composted.
✔️ Examples:
Plastic wrap and chip bags
Broken items
Used personal products (Q-tips, tissues, etc.)
🗑️ Please bag all garbage before placing it in the bin to help keep everything clean and pest-free.
Recycling is a big deal in Prince Edward County, and we’re proud to support it! We’ve made it simple with clearly labeled bins inside and outside the house.
✔️ What goes in:
Clean plastic containers (yogurt, water bottles, takeout containers)
Paper, newspaper, cardboard
Glass bottles and jars
Aluminum cans
❌ What doesn’t:
Greasy pizza boxes (those go in the green bin!)
Plastic bags or black plastic
Styrofoam
🧽 Tip: Please rinse containers if you can—it helps reduce smells and keeps the recycling clean.
This one’s close to our hearts. Every bottle, can, or returnable left behind by guests gets dropped off at the local depot—and 100% of the refund is donated to the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward.
We call it our “Bottle Return for a Cause”, and it's inspired by Atticus, a rescue cat who now calls the Lakehouse garden home (or at least acts like he owns it).
Just place your empties in the labeled bin near the waste station—we’ll take care of the rest.
🐾 Each guest’s donation helps provide care, food, and shelter to animals in need. It may seem small, but it adds up quickly—and means the world to someone furry and waiting for a home.
Before you leave, we kindly ask you to:
Take out all garbage, recycling, and green bin waste to the outdoor bins
Sort everything correctly using the posted guides
Leave empties in the designated bin for donation
We’ll handle final pickup and cleanup—just doing your part helps us keep the Lakehouse fresh for every future guest.
We built this home as a way to connect with nature, and part of that connection is respecting the land we’re lucky to enjoy. Every time you sort your waste, recycle your empties, or compost a coffee filter, you’re playing a small but meaningful role in keeping Prince Edward County pristine.
And if you leave behind a bottle or two? You’re helping a rescue animal get one step closer to finding home, too.
