Septic System FAQ: A Simple Guide to Keeping the Lilac Lakehouse Beautiful

When you're on vacation, the last thing you want to think about is plumbing. But here at the Lilac Lakehouse—nestled right along the calm waters of Lake Ontario—we rely on a private septic system to help us live a little more lightly and sustainably.

So why does this matter?

Well, the County’s peaceful vibe comes from its closeness to nature. And unlike city homes connected to big municipal sewers, our home takes care of water and waste on-site using a system that’s underground, quiet, and low-impact—as long as it’s treated with care.

That’s where you come in. With just a few easy habits and a little awareness, you can help protect this property, the surrounding land, and the environment—all while enjoying your stay, stress-free.

💧 What is a septic system, anyway?

Think of it as the Lakehouse’s private plumbing system. All the water from the showers, sinks, toilets, and washing machine flows into a buried septic tank. Inside, natural processes break things down and filter the water safely into the soil.

No pipes leading to the city. No big treatment plants. It’s just our own little eco-system under the yard.

This setup is safe, effective, and low-maintenance—but only if everyone who visits treats it right.

🚽 What can (and can’t) go down the toilet?

Let’s keep it simple. The “Three P’s” rule applies here:

✔️ Pee
✔️ Poo
✔️ (Toilet) Paper

That’s it. Everything else should go in the trash bin.

❌ Things that must never be flushed:

  • “Flushable” wipes (they’re not, sadly)

  • Pads or tampons

  • Cotton swabs, balls, or rounds

  • Paper towels, tissues, or napkins

  • Hair, dental floss, or lint

  • Cooking grease or oil

  • Harsh cleaners or chemical products

Even one small thing going down the wrong drain can cause a clog or system backup—not fun for anyone.

🧼 What about the shower, sinks, and kitchen?

Yes, please use them normally! Long hot showers, washing dishes, brushing teeth—it’s all okay. We just ask for a little mindful use when possible:

  • Don’t leave taps running unnecessarily

  • Spread out showers if you’re in a large group

  • Run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine

  • Avoid dumping grease or leftover food down the drain

And please don’t use bleach, drain cleaners, or other harsh chemicals—these can seriously harm the system and the healthy bacteria that keep it running smoothly.

🧴 Are the Lakehouse products septic-friendly?

Yes! Every shampoo, body wash, soap, and detergent provided at the Lilac Lakehouse is septic-safe and biodegradable. They’re not just good for the system—they’re gentle on the environment too.

If you’ve brought your own products from home, that’s totally fine—we just ask that you skip anything with bleach or non-septic-safe labels (especially laundry and cleaning products).

🧰 What if something feels off?

If you notice a slow drain, strange gurgling, or any kind of odour, don’t worry—we’ve got you. Just send us a quick message through Airbnb. These things are easy to fix early on, and we’d rather take a look than let it turn into a bigger issue.

No judgment, no stress—just a quick check-in helps us keep the house running smoothly for everyone.

🌿 Why this matters (and how you’re helping)

Taking care of the septic system isn’t just about avoiding plumbing problems. It’s about protecting the land, the lake, and the long-term health of the County. Every guest who stays at the Lilac Lakehouse becomes part of its story—and part of the community of people who treat this place with care.

By following these simple septic do’s and don’ts, you help:

  • Keep our gardens, lilacs, and fruit trees thriving

  • Protect the clean cove water for swimming and paddling

  • Make sure the next guest (and the one after that) has just as magical a stay

We built the Lilac Lakehouse as a place where people can breathe easier, reconnect with nature, and enjoy thoughtful design in a truly special setting. But the magic only works if everyone plays a part in protecting it.

So thank you—for reading this, for being mindful, and for choosing to be a great guest.

Your care today keeps the Lakehouse lovely for the next person. And who knows—maybe that next person will be you, on your next visit back.
